This calculator gives an estimate for planning by adding up the main cost parts: glass materials, labor, supplies, and (optionally) removal & disposal.

Materials

Material cost = (Number of windows) × (Avg glass area in ft²) × (Glass rate in $/ft²)

Labor

Labor cost = (Number of windows) × (Base labor per window) × (Complexity factor) × (Location factor)

Total

Total = (Materials + Labor + Supplies + Disposal) × (1 + Contingency)

Notice: This uses average costs and factors to ensure it is as accurate as possible, but it is still best for approximate cost estimation for planning, and should not replace a contractor. Actual window glass replacement costs can depend on local market costs, contractor labor rates, glass thickness/coatings (e.g., Low-E), IGU configuration, site access, frame condition, and disposal requirements.

  • Industry-Standard Formulas: The formulas and methods used in this calculator follow widely accepted standards in Financial.
  • Careful Verification: The calculator is tested to ensure it behaves correctly across a range of inputs.
  • Continuous Updates: The calculator is updated as needed to reflect better accuracy and usability.

Are you wondering how much it will cost to replace your window glass? Don't panic! In this post, we will guide you step-by-step on using our Window Glass Replacement Cost Estimator to calculate window glass replacement cost instantly.

We did our best to make this calculator as accurate as possible using average costs, and it also allows you to enter custom costs. However, use this estimate for planning purposes only and do not treat it as an exact glass replacement cost, as it varies depending on many factors.

In this guide we explain:

  • What are average window glass replacement costs?
  • Glass replacement cost by type of glass
  • What is a window glass replacement cost estimator?
  • How the window glass replacement cost estimator works?
  • A real-world example
A worker is replacing window glass

Now let's dive in and understand the window glass replacement cost calculator in depth.

Average Window Glass Replacement Cost

On average, window glass replacement costs homeowners around $380 per window, but prices can range from $300 to $900 depending on location, market conditions, and specifications.

Many factors affect the cost, such as glass type, window size and shape, window type, labor, location, and frame condition. That’s why contacting local contractors for pricing confirmation is essential. Generally, we show you an average list that can give you a cost idea.

Glass TypeAverage Cost Range (per window)
Single-Pane Glass$100 – $400
Double-Pane Glass$300 – $900
Triple-Pane Glass$400 – $1,000
Tempered Glass$200 – $700
Laminated Glass$275 – $750
Low-E Glass$350 – $850
Argon / Krypton Gas-Filled Glass$375 – $1,200 (additional)

Cost of Glass Replacement by Type of Glass

Glass cost can vary based on location and market conditions, but we have prepared an average glass cost and cost range table below (source: thisoldhouse.com):

Type of GlassCost Range (per window)Average Cost (Per window)
Argon-filled glass$375–$850$613
Frosted glass$350–$800$575
Krypton-filled glass$525–$1,190$858
Laminated glass$275–$625$450
Low-e glass$350–$840$595
Stained glass$100–$10,000$5,050
Tempered glass$180–$700$440

What is a Window Glass Replacement Cost Estimator?

A Window Glass Replacement Cost Estimator is a handy yet powerful tool that helps homeowners and contractors estimate the cost of replacing window glass in one or more windows.

The calculator accounts for many factors, such as the number of windows, glass type, average glass area in square feet (ft²), installation complexity, location and whether you need to remove and dispose the old glass — all of which are used to accurately estimate the window glass replacement costs.

How the Window Glass Replacement Cost Estimator Works?

The calculator uses a series of simple formulas to estimate the window glass replacement cost. You can take a look at the “How it works” section to see the exact formulas and explanations.

We will also explain a real-world example to help you understand how the cost is calculated:

For example, let’s assume that in your house, 5 windows need glass replacement. You decide to choose a double-pane IGU glass type and measure an average glass area of 9 ft². You also decide to include disposal of the old glass or IGU.

You can contact a local contractor or your local market to determine the current costs:

  • Window glass cost per ft² (e.g., double-pane IGU)
  • Labor cost per window, depending on the number of windows, access, height (1st floor, 2nd floor, 3rd floor), and how hard it is to remove the old IGU.
  • Disposal cost, if you want it included, such as sash or frame disposal, cleanup, and hauling broken glass, etc.
  • Markup mainly depends on the contractor and varies; some hide it, while some show it in the price list.

We have all the data needed. Now, let’s combine them to make the interpretation easier. We are assuming the following costs in this example:

  • Number of windows = 5
  • Glass type = Double-pane IGU (e.g., rate = $34 per ft²), depending on location and specs.
  • Average glass area = 9 ft²
  • Disposal included = yes (e.g., $30 per window).
  • Base labor per window = e.g., $110
  • Markup =  Suppose 15% (5% supplies + 10% contingency), depending on the contractor

Now, perform the calculation to approximate the total cost and cost per window:

  1. To calculate material cost per window, let's multiply the rate of double-pane IGU glass by average glass area:
    • Material cost per window = glass cost $34 per ft² × 9 ft² glass area = $306
  2. We have calculated material cost per window, now compute the per window cost before markup by adding material cost, labor cost and disposal cost:
    • Per window cost before markup = material $306 per window + labor $110 per window + $30 disposal = $446
  3. Next, calculate the accumulated total cost of window glass replacement included the markup, by multiplying per window cost with number of windows and markup:
    • This formula is used to calculate: Total cost = per window cost × number of windows × (1 + markup)
    • Total glass windows replacement cost = $446 per window × 5 windows × 1.15  = $2,564.5
  4. The last step is to calculate per window cost, you can do this by dividing the total cost by number of windows:
    • Per window cost = $2,564.5 ÷ 5 = $512.9

So, we have calculated the glass replacement cost for 5 windows at a total of $2,564.50, with a per-window cost of $512.90.
