Treadmill Speed Calculator

Last Updated: Oct 9, 2025

Do you use a treadmill every day during your workouts? Whether you are tracking progress, speed, pace, time, distance, or calories burned, you have come to the right place. We built a treadmill speed calculator that helps you calculate your speed, pace, and calories from distance and time.

In this guide, we cover:

  • What is treadmill speed?
  • What is a Treadmill Speed Calculator?
  • How treadmill speed is calculated
  • A real-world example
  • Treadmill incline — how incline affects speed & calories
  • Treadmill running vs walking — how the calculator treats them

Let's dive in.

What is treadmill speed?

  • Treadmill speed refers to how fast you run or walk, and it's usually shown in miles per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (km/h).
  • Pace is how long it takes to cover a set distance; it's usually measured in minutes per mile (min/mi) or minutes per kilometer (min/km).

Now let's see how to use the calculator, which formulas we use, and a real-world example.

What is a Treadmill Speed Calculator?

A treadmill speed calculator is an online tool specifically designed to calculate your treadmill speed and pace (min/mi or min/km) based on the distance and time it takes to cover that distance. Using the calculator, you can convert between:

  • Distance (miles or kilometers)
  • Time (seconds, minutes, hours)
  • Speed (mph or km/h)
  • Pace (min/mi or min/km)

How treadmill speed is calculated

The core calculations are simple — we use standard unit conversions. Below are the formulas we use:

These formulas help you calculate treadmill speed using your desired units.

Distance in miles, time in hours:

Speed (mph)=Distance (miles)Time (hours)

Distance in feet, time in seconds:

Speed (mph)=Distance (feet)÷Time (seconds)1.467

Distance in meters, time in seconds (for km/h):

Speed (km/h)=Distance (meters)Time (seconds)×3.6

Using treadmill pace (minutes per mile):

Speed (mph)=60Pace (minutes per mile)

Treadmill pace formula (min/mile):

Pace (min/mi)=Time (minutes)Distance (miles)

A real-world example

Now we will walk through a simple real-world scenario. Suppose:

A boy runs about 1 mile in 8 minutes on a treadmill.

Let's calculate the speed:

  • Distance: 1 mile
  • Time: 8 minutes
  • Speed (mph) ?

Speed (mph)=18÷60=7.5 mph

Thus, we calculated that the treadmill speed is 7.5 mph.

Treadmill incline — how incline affects speed & calories

Incline:

  • On a treadmill, incline (%) is measured as slope; a 5% incline means a rise/run grade of 0.05.
  • Does incline affect speed or effort? Yes. Adding incline does not change belt speed, but it increases workload — you do more vertical work, so effort, heart rate, breathing, and calories burned per minute all rise.

Calories:

  • In the calculator logic we use the ACSM treadmill equations, so the calculator estimates calories based on speed and incline when provided.
  • Remember, a small 1–2% incline is often used to simulate outdoor running resistance. Higher inclines (5% and above) are considerably harder and should be introduced gradually.

Treadmill running vs walking — how the calculator treats them

The calculator uses about 5 mph as the threshold:

  • If speed < 5 mph → walking equation (different VO2 slope).
  • If speed ≥ 5 mph → running equation.

If you want typical speed guidelines, take a look:

  • Walking: 1.5–4.0 mph
  • Brisk walk / power walk: 4.0–4.9 mph
  • Jogging: 5.0–6.5 mph
  • Running / speed work: >6.5 mph

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the treadmill speed for 1.5 miles in 12 minutes?

If you run a distance of 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, your treadmill speed is 7.5 mph.

That's considered a moderate running pace — good for improving cardiovascular fitness without overexerting yourself.

Here is the calculation:

Speed (mph) = 1.5 / 12 ÷ 60 = 7.5 mph

What is the treadmill speed for 1.5 miles in 10 minutes?

If you run 1.5 miles in 10 minutes, your treadmill speed is 9.0 mph. This is a faster running pace, suitable for interval training and experienced runners.

How fast should you walk on a treadmill?

Walking intensity on a treadmill depends on your goals, but typical walking speeds range from 3.0 to 5.0 mph. See these ranges:

  • 3.0 mph → Easy walk
  • 4.0 mph → Brisk walk
  • 5.0 mph → Power walk

If your goal is to burn calories and improve fitness, aim for about 3.5 to 4.0 mph.
